We all know as residents of DC that living in the city can provide an abundance of activities and learning experiences throughout the summer. Ms. Frances and the teachers at CHCNS take full advantage of these opportunities and plan impromptu field trips based on local events. Being well connected with many teachers and programs in the community, Ms. Frances and team often decide daily/weekly what the activity of that particular day is. Allow CHCNS to remove all the stress of planning daily outings and give your kids lifelong memories all summer long!
Daily Activities
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a typical day like?
The day will likely start with a morning meeting so that everyone can get to know each other. There is an abundance of toys, books and crafting materials in the classroom. Ms. Frances takes the children outside EVERYDAY, regardless of the weather! It’s typical for Ms. Frances to take the kids to Marion (Turtle) or Garfield parks, Yards Park splash pools, Eastern Market to visit with the vendors, hop on a Metro bus (kids ride free) to the Botanic Garden or Smithsonian Carousel, story time at East City Bookshop, etc.
What do the sugars (as Ms. Frances calls them) do on a typical day?
Preschool dance and music classes, science fun, field trips around the Hill and DC, arts and crafts, visits from various artists including musicians, dancers and artists, outdoor activities, and playground visits are just some of the activities Ms. Frances and her sugars will participate in during summer camp.
What are the drop-off details?
Drop-off time is 8:30am. For security purposes, all entry doors remain locked at the church. Teachers will be at the 5th street entrance waiting to let parents/children into the school. If you are late for drop-off, then its best to call or text the whatsapp chat. All parents are included once enrolled in the program.
What are pick-up details?
Pick-up will be at 3:00pm. The camp does offer early pickup based on parent’s needs. If picking up early, times must be communicated to teachers in advance so arrangements can be made. Usually the students and teachers are away from school most of the day.
What is the age range of the campers?
The youngest camper allowed is 2.5yrs old per our license requirements. There is no maximum age, but we expect the majority of campers to be between 2.5-7yrs old.
What should I send with my kiddo/s?
A nut-free lunch, water bottle, sunblock, swimsuit, towel and a change of clothes. Nut-free snacks are provided by the school.
Will there be a nap/rest period?
Typically not. There are beanbags and blankets for use if a child needs to take a break.
What about snacks?
A nut-free snack and water will be provided each day.
What is the maximum number of campers each day?
We have a daily maximum capacity for 16 children to attend camp.
What is the adult-child ratio?
Per OSSE requirements, CHCNS follows an 1:8 adult-to-child ratio.
