Curriculum Overview
At Capitol Hill Cooperative Nursery School (CHCNS) we view the child as one who is dynamic and curious and who approaches the world with a competent and individual set of learning strategies and abilities. We believe each child has the right to a nurturing, safe, and playful learning environment which fosters social and emotional growth.
Frances Slaughter (Ms. Frances), the Program Director and Teacher, has been preparing three- and four-year-olds for their transition to kindergarten for more than 40 years. CHCNS is a loosely structured program as Ms. Frances’ goal is to create a fun environment so that kids are excited about school. CHCNS Offers Preschool, Summer Camp & Drop-In Days
Our program allows children to work on social & emotional development, communication & language skills, personal & physical development, as well as explore our local community. Our curriculum focuses on the following fundamental concepts:
- Teachers help build confidence so students can better communicate their needs, such as selecting activities, discussing ideas, speaking & working with peers, making friends, following rules, taking turns, building self awareness and asking for help.
- Teachers help students become better listeners through simple tasks, story time - both written and make believe, giving simple instructions & helping students follow through, as well as using past, present & future forms of language.
- Teachers ensure students spend time outside everyday either playing around the church or going on daily walks to nearby parks & riding scooters. They also help students develop control & coordination of movement with games & exercise and teach hand washing, personal hygiene and personal needs.
- Teachers spend time with each student talking about their personal experiences and family, they make observations about the world around them, connecting similarities and differences in the community, especially during daily walks.
- Monthly visits by a qualified movement instructor & music teacher, who encourage students to experiment with songs, music & dance.
- Students also have access to a wide range of artistic tools & techniques where they can use their imagination to create works of art, not only through daily play but also for all holidays often making gifts for family & friends.
- Daily play includes access to many puzzles, blocks & stem toys that not only foster imaginative play but work on fine motor skills and cooperative play.
